This doll has been sold.Charming 20-inch antique German doll with papier-mâché shoulder head, unmarked but looks like those made by the Schilling and Dressel factories, ca. 1880-1890. Complexion paint is original with good details and color, though a tiny scratch on one cheek and several small scratches under her left eye. The spots on her cheeks and forehead in the photo are simply light reflections. Eyebrows are multistroked, cheeks are rosy and lips have shading strokes. Her inset blown glass eyes have some age pitting which makes them look somewhat cloudy. She has her original skin wig in very good condition, indicating that she was intended as a baby, as there were no character baby dolls as this date. She has cloth body with composition lower arms, two chipped fingers. Body seems sturdy, though there is a mend up near the shoulder plate in the front and one lower leg. The other lower leg has a split, but someone has sewn her stocking on, so the stocking seems to be holding the leg together. Not a difficult job if you want to take off the stocking and mend the leg. She wears vintage clothing: white cotton drawers and half slip, flannel half slip, a white cotton guimpe, her gown, and lacy cap. All clothing is in good condition and sturdy, but somewhat yellowed and could be laundered. What a beautiful early baby, all ready to display!
