Early and interesting 12-inch antique German papier-mâché and cloth doll, of the type referred to as Sonneberg Taufling, Ca. 1850-1860, the baby doll of its time. The shoulder head has sleeping eyes and a bald head with painted side curls. There is some repair on the back of his head and cheeks, very well done and virtually undetectable. Taufling has his original body: papier-mâché lower torso and lower limbs with jointed ankles and wrists, cloth floating limbs. The cloth portions have had repairs, as would be expected, and back on one finger is chipped. Taufling wears a vintage cotton print gown which could well be original, has a few age holes on one sleeve. Also vintage drawers, shift and half slip. What a fabulous early baby doll, very rarely found!
